Isaac Heeney to undergo surgery after breaking thumb at pre-season training

Sydney has suffered a fresh injury blow to one of its biggest stars, with Isaac Heeney to undergo surgery and avoid contact work for a month after being hurt at pre-season training.

The Swans have been hit with another injury blow to one of their big hitters with Isaac Heeney set for surgery on a broken thumb.

The 23-year-old suffered the injury at training and will have to wear a brace and avoid any contact work for a month.

However, the club is confident he will be right for the start of the season.

The Swans open their campaign with a trip to the Adelaide Crows on Saturday March 21.

“Isaac was struck awkwardly on the hand in a fairly routine contest during training on Monday. It was just one of those unfortunate incidents that can happen at training,” Swans head of football Charlie Gardiner said.

“Scans confirmed a fracture in his thumb so he will undergo surgery tomorrow to repair the break.

“Isaac is obviously disappointed but he should be back running in a matter of days and we’re confident he will be available for the start of the season.”

It is another blow for the Swans with Lance Franklin facing a race against time to make the start of the season following a knee operation.

Jackson Thurlow is also set to miss the start of the season after an ankle operation.
