ST KILDA defender Jake Carlisle says he will never resort to personal on-field sledging again, admitting he crossed the line in a controversial exchange involving Carlton captain Marc Murphy.

Speaking about the incident for the first time, Carlisle, 25, told the Herald Sun he had learnt a valuable lesson and would temper his approach in the future.

While he said on-field banter always would be a part of the game, he agreed that what happened during the spiteful Round 8 encounter with the Blues went too far.

“It won’t happen again, that’s a non-negotiable,” he said as he prepared for tomorrow night’s game against his former side Essendon.

“You can have a bit of banter on the field, but you don’t get personal, and it doesn’t matter if it is myself, ‘Murph’ or any other player in the competition — it just shouldn’t happen.

“You make mistakes and things happen, but no matter what stage of the game it is, or whatever happens on the field, nothing should ever get personal.”

While Carlisle would not reveal what was said by players of either team, some of the comments were about Murphy’s wife, Jessie, which infuriated the Blues skipper.

“As a club, we have acknowledged we got it wrong, and hopefully we can all move on from it now,” Carlisle said.

An already tense atmosphere boiled over during the third quarter of the match after Carlisle copped an accidental knee from Blues forward Levi Casboult.

As the Saints defender was on the ground, an unusually agitated Murphy ran past and made comments that sparked a brawl.

Murphy refused to shake hands with a number of St Kilda players after the game and later released a social media statement condemning an online smear campaign against his family.

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson and captain Jarryn Geary called Murphy phoned the match to apologise, admitting some of the on-field remarks overstepped acceptable boundaries.

Carlisle inflamed the situation further when he “liked” a tweet from a member of the public who had criticised Murphy for being too sensitive, a move he now regrets.

“That wasn’t smart,” Carlisle said. “I spoke to the club about that and obviously with what had been done, you are always going to cop a bit of flak. Sometimes it gets to the point where it (his response) is almost like a lash-out.

“But you learn from your mistakes and what I have to do is make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Carlisle hasn’t spoken to Murphy since the incident, but indicated a willingness to address the issue with him at the end of the season.

“Down the track when the time is right I might,” Carlisle said. “Carlton are playing good footy at the moment and he is leading them well. I am sure he is thinking more about his footy right now and when the time is right, we might (speak).”

Carlisle is yet to finally resolve his compensation claim against Essendon, but hopes that, and tonight’s game, are the final pieces of closure he needs for his time at the Bombers.

“People are always going to be frustrated with how things went on, and that’s why some guys left,” he said. “But there are no more grudges, we have all moved on.”
