GOLD Coast recalled Gary Ablett for the final match of the season — but he failed to make it through training and has been withdrawn. Has he played his last game for the Suns.

The club has confirmed the dual-Brownlow medallist failed to pass a fitness test and will not line-up against the Power at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night. He hasn’t played since Round 20. SCROLL DOWN TO SEE THE FULL ROUND 23 TEAMS Ablett is expected to seek a trade back to Geelong at the end of the season and if that can’t be completed, he may retire. RUN HOME: ALL THE PERMUTATIONS FOR ROUND 23 As expected, the two-time Brownlow Medallist was among four inclusions as under AFL rules, the Suns had to name Ablett in their team for the Saturday game. Then Ablett had to pass the fitness test at Thursday night training. “Gaz gave himself the best opportunity to play this weekend, but unfortunately at training this evening he simply could not reach the speed required to be passed fit to play this weekend,” said Gold Coast football boss Marcus Ashcroft. Ablett has struggled with a persistent hamstring problem in the last few weeks of the season. Earlier on Thursday, interim coach Dean Solomon had said Ablett was likely to play against the Power. “I had a really good conversation with him five minutes ago and he said ‘I’m feeling really confident’,” he said. “You back in his judgement; he’s earnt a lot of trust over the years and knows his body better than all of us.” “But he’s ready to go, massive chance.” Meanwhile, Melbourne has recalled Jack Watts for this week’s clash with Collingwood. Watts was dropped earlier this month by coach Simon Goodwin. He played two matches in the VFL and will make his senior return on Saturday. “Clearly he’s got a lot of hysteria around Jack and how he’s performing — he’s improving,” Goodwin said. “His two games at VFL level have showed he’s progressing and he’s performing probably now to the level we think is really appropriate. “We’re really hopeful that Jack is continuing to improve and looking forward to seeing him play his best football.” The Pies and Demons last met on Queen’s Birthday, with Watts the match-winner for Melbourne. Rising star favourite Ryan Burton will miss Hawthorn’s final match with a foot injury. Sydney will be without Dan Hannebery and Tom Papley for its match against Carlton.
