In a deal struck on the final morning of the trade period, Caddy heads to Richmond in exchange for pick 24 in next month’s draft.

The clubs also swapped later picks, with Geelong’s pick 56 heading to Richmond and the Tigers sending pick 64 to the Cats.

Geelong also completed a deal with Fremantle, swapping forward Shane Kersten for pick 63.

Caddy said he didn’t see a move coming until he was approached to be part of a potential swap for Brett Deledio.

“That fell through but Richmond was still really keen.”

He said as soon as his name was raised as a trade target Prestia was straight on the phone to lure him to Punt Rd.

“We’ve been mates since junior footy played back in Diamond Valley rep teams together ... played at Vic Metro together and obviously got drafted together up to the Gold Coast in 2011 and we lived together for a couple of years,” Caddy said on Trade Radio.

“When he got wind of that he was into me straight away, but it’s not just Dion ... with a few tweaks and a few other things (Richmond) can really turn it around and this club can have success in the near future.

“I’ve really got belief in him (Damien Hardwick), I’ve heard he’s really well liked by the playing group and that’s really important.”

Caddy, 24, has played 95 games in six seasons including 18 this year.

“We love what Josh is going to bring to our team, he’s a big-bodied, aggressive midfielder that can run, win the contested footy, and also kick goals,” Richmond talent manager Dan Richardson said.

“Josh has already shown his talent, but at 24 years of age, his best football is still in front of him, and that’s really exciting for us.

“Josh will really add to our midfield depth, and join players like Cotchin, Martin, Prestia, Grigg, Corey and Brandon Ellis, Miles, Conca and Vlastuin all running through the middle, which is a great asset for us entering season 2017.”

Kersten is the Dockers’ fourth recruit of a busy trade period, following Brad Hill, Cam McCarthy and Joel Hamling.

The Cats have also been active, swapping Billie Smedts for Carlton’s Zach Tuohy. They also lost champion Jimmy Bartel to retirement.

Fremantle list manager Brad Lloyd said he was rapt with the Dockers’ trade haul.

“Shane (Kersten) had a strong year in 2016 playing in Geelong’s forward line, where he showed his ability to play his role and kick goals,” Lloyd said.

“We look forward to Shane adding to Fremantle’s forward line and being a long-term player for the club.”
