Grimes had his nose re-aligned on Friday after it was broken in a training mishap last week.

It didn't keep him off the track for long, but he wasn't taking any chances of copping another high blow, donning the unusual protective mask during ball work. The look appeared to lighten the mood at Punt Rd with players including captain Trent Cotchin and fellow defender Nick Vlastuin seeing the funny side.

Grimes posted a picture of himself in the mask on Instagram with the caption: "Not sure this is a look I'll be pursuing much in the future, but regardless it's good to be back out on the track after surgery and with a slightly straighter beak ... Thanks to everyone for the messages over the last few days!"

After battling repeated injuries earlier in his career, the no-frills defender has become one of the Tigers' most important players and was named in last year's All-Australian squad.

Last week, Cotchin posted a photo of Grimes with a heavily swollen nose on Instagram with the caption, “Rough day on the track”.

Grimes replied, “They weren’t joking when they said don’t get your nose out of joint…”, with Cotchin going on to apparently quote Grimes as saying, “It’s bad when Siri doesn’t recognize you, yeah” — referencing facial recognition no longer working on his iPhone.

A Richmond spokesperson confirmed to the Herald Sun that Grimes had suffered a broken nose “in a training drill” which would require surgery.

“Grimes will have his nose re-aligned on Friday and the injury will not affect his preparation for the upcoming season,” the spokesperson said.

Grimes, 27, played 23 games last season, averaging 11.5 disposals and 3.2 marks.
