IS THIS the vision that saves Trent Cotchin from missing a Grand Final?

The Richmond skipper is sweating on the match review panel’s assessment of his bump on GWS star Dylan Shiel, with Cotchin already cited for two offences this year.

Cotchin has been fined twice this season and a third fine would automatically trigger a one-match ban, which would see him miss the Grand Final.

New vision has emerged today of a bump laid by Cotchin’s teammate David Astbury that felled Shiel with seconds remaining in the opening term of Saturday’s preliminary final.

With just 10 seconds remaining in the quarter Shiel chases a loose ball and Astbury collides with the midfielder.

Shiel gets straight back up to his feet.

The 24-year-old was ruled out of the game mid-way through the second term with concussion.

In deliberations the MRP will assess whether Cotchin had another option — such as to tackle — when approaching Shiel.

Should he be charged, the Tigers would almost certainly challenge the decision at the tribunal.

This vision could be used in a bid to clear his name.

Cotchin said he was simply attacking the football and did not choose to bump.

When asked post-match whether he thought he was in trouble, Cotchin said: “I don’t think so, from memory, I was going for the footy.

“(My instinct) was to hit the contest hard, just going for the ball.

“I would like to think so (that he will be fine). Again, it is out of my control — it is what it is.”

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick and teammate Brandon Ellis backed Cotchin as a ball player and to avoid any MRP sanction.

“I think so (he’ll get off), at the end of the day (he’s a) ball player. The fact of the matter is he hasn’t been reported,” he said.

AFL legend Leigh Matthews believes Cotchin should be cleared, declaring there was no doubt the Tigers skipper had eyes for the ball.

“He’s going for the footy, his hands are down for the football and he ends up with the footy in his hands,” he said on Channel 7.

“You can’t bump high but that wasn’t a bump, that was more a collision for me.

“You’ve got to be able to attack the footy with as much force and ferocity as you can summons.

“I think it would be really bad for the game if there was a problem with that incident.”
