Callum Moore and Daniel Rioli’s bizarre goal celebration explained

JACK Higgins might have become known as Richmond’s resident funny man but Daniel Rioli and Callum Moore are being touted as the having the best celebration. And there’s a sweet story behind it.

JACK Higgins might have become known as Richmond’s resident funny man but a pair of Tigers paid tribute to a different comedian during a bizarre goal celebration on Friday night.

After Daniel Rioli kicked a goal in the opening quarter against St Kilda, he and fellow forward Callum Moore finally rolled out a hand-slapping routine that had been some time in the making.

A tribute to late New Zealand stuntman and comedian Johnny ‘Danger’ Bennett, who passed away in a motorcycle accident in April, the pair had been carrying out the routine on the training track and in the corridors at Punt Rd Oval in recent months before finally getting to wheel it out in a game for the first time.

“It’s just a little thing we’ve been doing the last couple of years, a little tribute to Johnny Danger who’s a dangerous figure over in New Zealand,” Moore explained.

“He passed away so it’s just a little thing about him but it’s just our celebration that we like doing.

“We were just doing it at training sometimes and it just clicked. We walk past each other in the hallway and it just happens.

“It’s actually the first time we could do it in a game because sometime he’s on the bench or I’m on the bench and we couldn’t do it so it was good to be able to do it.”

Moore said he was a big fan of Danger’s work, and had got Rioli on board with it.

It was more fun and games for the Tigers as the night went on with the side scoring a 54-point win over the Saints, bouncing back from a two-point loss to Greater Western Sydney the previous week.

“Coming off the back of a close loss we had to prove a point coming back here and really show St Kilda what we’re made of,” Moore said.

“I thought we did that, really showed our pressure and it was good to get the win.”
