PORT Adelaide vice-captain Ollie Wines has revealed continuing to play under Ken Hinkley was a key reason for him signing a four-year extension to his contract.
And Wines said the length of his contract was a reflection of how he viewed the club — that it mirrored the premiership window that had been opened up for the maturing list.
Wines, 23, has been earmarked as a future captain by Hinkley but said that sentiment had no bearing on his decision.
It was a sense of belonging and belief in the club’s future that had swayed him.
“The biggest second thoughts I had was when his (Hinkley’s) future was up in the air a little bit,” Wines said. “That perhaps would have made my decision a little bit tougher because I’ve formed such a good bond with him.
“He’s almost like a bit of a father figure over here.
“Not just for me but I know I can speak on the behalf of a lot of the boys.
“I guess he’s a big part of why I made the decision.”
Wines has been in cracking form leading up to his signature.
He racked up 29 and 35 disposals in the club’s wins against Richmond and the Western Bulldogs in the club’s past two matches and has now clocked up 119 games with the Power.
But he said he had still much to learn from captain Travis Boak before he could step up to lead the club.
“If I have aspirations to captain the club one day, which I would love to do one day, but at this stage playing under ‘Boaky’, learning off him — and we’ve brought some incredible leadership into the club this year — learning off Tommy Rockliff, Jack Trengove, that (the captaincy) is not on my mind at the moment,” Wines said. “I’m just playing the best footy that I can play and those sort of things will take care of themselves.”
