Footy 18: Mark Robinson and David King preview Port Adelaide’s 2018 season

FEW clubs have ever pulled off a recruiting spree like Port Adelaide did during the off-season. But is it enough to turn the club into a genuine premiership contender? Watch MARK ROBINSON and DAVID KING preview the Power’s season.

Will Jack Watts silence the critics?

PORT Adelaide went on an almighty recruiting spree during the off-season, adding Jack Watts, Tom Rockliff, Steven Motlop, Jack Trengove, Trent McKenzie and Lindsay Thomas.

On paper, this team has all the makings of a genuine premiership contender. But will the big moves during the trade period translate to wins on the park?

Herald Sun columnist David King says the Power are officially “all in” but he isn’t convinced the club will be there on the last Saturday in September.

“They won 14 games last year, 2-9 against top eight teams. They bullied the bottom 10 … with a massive percentage,” he said.

“There are some gaps there in terms of, are they absolutely rock solid premiership contenders? The off-season recruiting has been super strong and maybe they have pushed their chips all in.”

The additions of Rockliff and Motlop will allow the likes of Robbie Gray and Chad Wingard to spend even more time forward in 2018.

But with so many big moves, the pressure on coach Ken Hinkley has gone up, according to Herald Sun chief football writer Mark Robinson.

“Arguably, Ken Hinkley goes into this season as the number one coach under the most pressure,” Robbo said.

“(He) recruited big time, has developed the list, they are ready to roll. I think there are going to be a lot of eyes on Port Adelaide this year.”

Robbo and Kingy preview all things Port Adelaide for Footy 18, the Herald Sun’s 116 page footy magazine.
