Todd Goldstein says he is hopeful of clinching new Kangaroos deal despite lucrative St Kilda offer

Todd Goldstein will talk to his manager this week about North Melbourne’s latest offer and a more lucrative contract from St Kilda.

North Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein will have crucial talks on his future when he meets with his manager over the next week.

The veteran big man is weighing up a more lucrative three-year offer from St Kilda to play a support role to gun young ruckman Rowan Marshall.

Marshall is one of the hottest young talents in the competition but the Saints remain desperate to secure another established ruckman to help ease the load on Marshall.

The Kangaroos have tabled a two-year deal with a trigger clause for a third season in a bid to keep the free agent as their lead ruckman.

While the Kangaroos remain confident of keeping the best-and-fairest winner, Goldstein would be set to earn more money in arguably the last contract of his career by moving to Moorabbin.

The durable 31-year-old is having another excellent season after finishing seventh in last year’s best-and-fairest.

The All-Australian said he planned down with his agent, TLA — Stride Sports management supremo Tom Petroro, shortly.

“Hopefully I’m catching up with him over the next week or so,” Goldstein said on Triple M.

“It’s been hard with ours schedules, with a six-day break into two travels, into another six-day break.

“I’m not sure how the conversation has gone with the footy club and hopefully we are getting closer to something.

St Kilda has made a pitch to Todd Goldstein.
St Kilda has made a pitch to Todd Goldstein.

“Tommy is one of the best operators, so he will gather all of the facts that I need, and when he has got enough stuff he will present it to me.

“But until then he has said to me focus on footy and let him take care of everything else.”

North Melbourne’s new footy manager Brady Rawlings has made moves to improve the Roos’ offer to Goldstein after initial talks centred on a one-year deal.

The Kangas can ill-afford to lose the hard-running big man as they already lack some ruck depth. Back-up Tom Campbell, who has played two games this season, signed a two-year contract extension last week.

North is trying to bolster its ruck department with strong interest in Port Adelaide big man Peter Ladhams.

The out-of-contract Ladhams was excellent against Essendon on Saturday, but has been stuck behind Scott Lycett at the Power.

While Goldstein is still favoured to stay at Arden St, Ladhams could quickly develop into a No.1 ruckman at AFL level.

North is one of several clubs chasing Ladhams, with Essendon also on the lookout for more ruck depth if Sam Draper leaves for St Kilda.

Goldstein said he had rediscovered “the fire” and “motivation” over the past two seasons and was determined to maintain his strong form.

“I’m just enjoying my footy and enjoying life, and it makes it a lot easier to come to work every day when you want to be here,” he said.
