Unrestricted free agent Todd Goldstein believes he has as much as five more seasons as football, hopeful he can finish his career a 300-game one-club player.
Goldstein is out of contract with the Roos and adamant he will play on somewhere next year, hopeful North Melbourne can come to terms with his management on a new deal.
Goldstein is in the best shape of his career, dropping 5kg over summer training six days a week with his former athlete partner Flick.
With his form on the improve and the Roos hoping to knock off Essendon on Good Friday today, the 30-year-old is in a good place after two years of mental health issues through 2016-17.
He told the Herald Sun he was hopeful his manager Tom Petroro could broker a new deal after coming off a lucrative four-season deal.
“I don’t think my form warrants me not having a contract so I think I will be playing footy next year and that’s my goal, to keep playing. Hopefully we can come to an agreement.
“I think every player wants to be (a one-club player) and I would love to be a 300-gamer for this footy club. I am on 216 games so it’s not unrealistic.
“Every player wants that but it’s a business as well so if the club don’t want me I would have to look somewhere else.
“But as far as I am aware my manager (Tom Petroro) talks to the club regularly and hopefully they can come to something sooner rather than later.”
Goldstein finished off an excellent 783-hitout, 320-possession season last year and still had the fire in the belly.
It saw him hitting the gym hard in his mandatory eight-week break.
“This is the best my body has felt in a while and with my headspace I am enjoying list as much as I have ever. So while I am doing that I would like to keep playing. I don’t know why I can’t play three, four or five years.”
“It was probably 4 or 5kg over pre-season and it’s 3-4kg now, a significant amount.
“It was just focusing on diet and when the season finished I was quite motivated to keep going. My partner and I trained a fair bit and she helped me a lot.
“Being an ex-athlete, we were doing five or six days a week doing the gym and training hard.”
Goldstein will run into Tom Bellchambers yet again at Marvel Stadium, having played against each other since their junior days.
“My form has been OK without being great. It was better on the weekend. It’s just finding ways to have an impact. We just want to play in the big games and be part of them.
“We raised a lot of money last year and hopefully we can do the same thing.
“I have played a fair bit against Tom and Zac Clarke I have known since basketball days. (Ruck coach) Will Minson and I will have a good look at them but mostly its about how I can help the team.”
