North Melbourne champion Brent Harvey wants to play 450 games

GAMES record holder in waiting Brent Harvey wants to chase down 450 games if North Melbourne will have him beyond this season.

GAMES record holder in waiting Brent Harvey wants to chase down 450 games if North Melbourne will have him beyond this season.

Harvey, 38, passes Michael Tuck’s 426-game record on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium against St Kilda.

The evergreen small man hopes to sit down with Kangaroos coach Brad Scott in “a couple of weeks” to discuss his future.

“I’ve always said if my mind and my body is good that I’d love to play football for as long as I can and I won’t turn away from that,” Harvey said.

“That’s the truth, but unfortunately it doesn’t just revolve around me.

“It’s how the club’s going, it’s how the team’s going, so there’s a lot of stars that have to align for that to happen and if it happened it will be fantastic.

“If it (doesn’t) happen I’ve had a decent career so I better not complain.”

The Herald Sun reported last week that Harvey’s manager Shane Casley and North Melbourne had put off talks given the Roos’ form slump - a slide that was arrested against Collingwood last Friday.

Harvey has shown no signs of slowing down and could finish the home-and-away season on 431 games with the prospect of finals to come.

“The day I fall out of love with football I’ll put my hand up first and say I need to walk away — I’m still in love with it,” he said.

Harvey said he didn’t want his record-breaking game to distract the Kangaroos from shoring up a potential finals berth with victory over St Kilda.

“(I’ve spoken to) Brad about everything and like my 400th the whole focus will be about beating the Saints who are in really good form at the minute,” Harvey said.

“We’ll have a really good week on the training track we’ll try to keep it not about me as much as I can and more about the team.

“My focus again will be on going out there and starting well as a team.”

Kangaroos forward Drew Petrie will play alongside Harvey despite training with a protective bandage on his left arm on Monday.

Petrie was restricted to light goalkicking and marking with his right hand after a knock in the win over Collingwood.

“He does everything right, he’s probably just making sure that he’s going to get up this week, 100 per cent,” Harvey said.

“He’s 100 per cent I don’t think he’ll miss this game.”

Hawthorn champion Tuck has held the games record since 1990, Richmond great Kevin Bartlett (403 games) holding the honour for the 10 years before that.

Harvey said he hoped his record would be broken.

“I think it’s going to have to take a pretty strong individual to get there but one day I certainly hope that they break the record,” he said.
