North Melbourne caretaker coach Rhyce Shaw has declared he wants to stay on in the role beyond this season after his rejuvenated Roos ambushed flag contenders Richmond at Marvel Stadium.
While stressing he hadn’t looked further ahead than the Tigers game, Shaw said he had already experienced a special culture around Arden Street, evidenced by the manner in which the Kangaroos have responded since the departure of long-time coach Brad Scott last Sunday.

When asked about whether could turn an interim role into something more permanent, Shaw said: “I hope so. I have really enjoyed my time at this football club.
“When I spoke to Brad (Scott) about coming down here (late) last year, he spoke about how tight this group was and how tight the club was, and I really wanted to be a part of that.
“It’s fast-forwarded pretty quickly from there. I am really pleased with where I am at right now and where the group is going.
“Even though I have only been here seven months, I feel as though I am embedded in this place now.”

Shaw revealed how he had gone for a run at the club earlier on Friday to ease his nerves.
But armed with one of the best football pedigrees, a sharp coaching mind, and a desire to do the best he can with this group, Shaw couldn’t have been more impressive in his first outing in the role.
Typically, he lauded his assistant coaches for their work in keeping the group focused after such an unusual week, and also his players for staying level throughout.
“The boys really put their best footy out there,” Shaw said after the 37-point win.
“It wasn’t just me. I will give you the hot tip. Our other coaches … put in a heap of work this week.
“That’s the type of footy we want to play going forward, and that’s our benchmark. Now, we refocus on Gold Coast (next Saturday).”
The Kangaroos exposed the Tigers in most areas of the game, including in pressure, tackling and putting the Richmond defence under extreme pressure, with much of it coming from the younger players within the group.
“The kids have been really, really good. They probably haven’t got the accolades, other than Cam (Zurhaar) when he won the Rising Star (nomination).
“Tarryn Thomas, he is just playing some great footy. He is a team-first player, but when he breaks the shackles, you guys will know about it. With Jy Simpkin and Luke Davies-Uniacke, it’s (looking) pretty good.”
