MELBOURNE has instructed its players to move out of their parents’ homes at a certain age to accelerate their maturity and independence.

Onballer Angus Brayshaw, 22, was told to start renting this year in a move strongly endorsed by his father, Mark Brayshaw.

“The footy club wanted Angus and all the guys his age to actually move out and put some hair on their chest,” Brayshaw, who is president of the AFL Coaches’ Association, said.

“I couldn’t agree (with it) more. Get out, cook for yourself, wash for yourself (and) bloody sort it all out.

“He lives in Jack Trengove’s house in Albert Park with Clayton Oliver, Aaron vandenBerg and young Dion (Johnstone) and it’s great.

“It hasn’t hurt his footy and it’s not for the first time that the club knows best.”

The Brayshaw’s Bayside household has been deserted with Angus’s younger brothers Andrew (Fremantle) and Hamish (West Coast) drafted to Perth last November.

Hamish has moved in with a host family in Perth while Andrew lived with Nat Fyfe and then Lachie Neale and has plans to soon share a house with young Dockers Adam Cerra and Hugh Dixon.

Mark Brayshaw said he “let the cat out the bag” to Christian Salem’s parents that their son would have to move at a February luncheon hosted by Christian Petracca’s family.

“I’m guessing here, but I’m pretty sure it came from the boss — Simon (Goodwin),”

Brayshaw told Melbourne Football Club podcast Dee Tales.

“I don’t know this 100 per cent, but according to Angus the guys his age — third or fourth-year players — were told that they needed to leave home and start cooking and fending and doing a few things for themselves.

“Simon (Goodwin) told me that it’s what they expected Angus to do and by the way, I couldn’t agree more.

“It’s very easy to get in the rut. And of course, the first year or two it helps to have somebody do that for you, but after the third year — out.

“It was well and truly time for Angus to do it.”

Brayshaw suffered a “kick in the pants” by being left out of the Round 1 team but the out-of-contract midfielder has since struck career-best form.
