Jack Watts says a blind spot caused Bernie Vince to gift Tom Lynch with last minute chance to steal a win

MELBOURNE hero Jack Watts says a blind spot was to blame for Bernie Vince’s brain fade which gifted Tom Lynch the chance to steal victory after the final siren.

MELBOURNE hero Jack Watts says a blind spot was to blame for Bernie Vince’s brain fade which gifted Tom Lynch the chance to steal victory after the final siren.

Watts passed the ball to Vince in the back pocket with 30 seconds remaining only for the former Crow to chip it to Lynch, who marked on the boundary 50m from goal.

The Gold Coast star’s set-shot faded late and just failed to score, handing the Demons their eighth victory this season.

Watts’ third goal seized back the lead with two minutes on the clock and he then took a match-saving mark at fullback before the Vince gaffe.

“Bernie’s probably our best kick and best decision-maker,” Watts said. “He said he just did not see Lynchy coming from anywhere.

“We nearly shot ourselves in the foot again, didn’t we? I was happy to be the one to get the boys over the line.”

The playmaker, who re-signed until 2019 this month, produced another best-afield performance in his breakout season with outgoing coach Paul Roos thrilled at his coming of age.

“I love Jack, he’s one of the best people I’ve met in footy and to see him get the reward is really exciting,” Roos said.

“It’s great to see him enjoying his footy, it’s great to see him with a smile on his face.

“In terms of where he’s come from and the criticism he’s got I think he’s finally getting the recognition.”

Roos said the Demons identified Watts as the likely gamebreaker in an error-riddled affair at the MCG.

Watts took a team-high three contested marks and said he flushed his third goal, knowing straight away he had recaptured the lead.

“His game was exceptional and the difference (between) us winning and losing,” Roos said.

Watts has slotted a career-high 34 goals this season, relishing his key post in attack alongside power forward Jesse Hogan.

The former No. 1 draft pick has now played in three games decided after the final siren — for three wins.

His first pair came before joining Melbourne, playing for Vic Metro and Brighton Grammar.

Watts praised the Demons as the most exciting club in the land, crediting Roos with the rise back to relevance.

“We’re putting in so much hard work and the club has done such an amazing job in getting us in a really good spot to go forward,” he said.

“You wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the league I reckon at the moment.

“Roosy came in when we were on our knees and gave us respect which we never had and has turned this club around.

“I’d say the football world is starting to take notice of the Melbourne Football club, which has never happened before since I’ve been here.

“We can’t thank Roosy enough for what he’s done. Him and his family have come down to Melbourne and completely transformed the Melbourne footy club.

“He’s handing it over to Goody (2017 coach Simon Goodwin) in such an amazing way that we’re just in the best spot that any club is in at the moment.

“He’s been incredible.”
