Former No. 2 draft pick Harley Bennell continues to ramp up his training as he works towards a return to the AFL.

The Melbourne recruit cut a striking figure on Saturday as he trained with former Gold Coast teammate Luke Russell at Gosch’s Paddock.

He is understood to be happy with the way he’s tracking after years of well-documented soft tissue injuries.

The 83-gamer was delisted by Fremantle at the end of last season before Melbourne threw the midfielder a lifeline.

Demons coach Simon Goodwin said last month he was encouraged by Bennell’s progress.

“Harley’s tracking really well,” he said.

“He’s doing a lot of his running program, getting some really good load in so there’s a really good chance he’ll rejoin the group when we come back into training and train with us, and be available for selection after the first few weeks.

“That’s an exciting thing for us.”
