There’s a new model of the 5’9” ballgetter roaming the halls of Waverley these days, but Tom Mitchell intends to play sponge to his star predecessor this summer.
Hawthorn great Sam Mitchell has returned to the club as an assistant coach and can expect a hard tag from the Brownlow medallist as he looks to take his game to a new level.

Mitchell, 25, said he planned to pick the brain of the 329-game and four-time premiership player over coming months.
“He was someone who was a strong leader at the club, and also a highly-skilled player and highly-driven player,” Mitchell said.
“His mentality with the way he approached the game and some technical parts with how he used his hands and feet are probably some things I’ll sit down and discuss with him when I get the chance.”
The reigning league best and fairest said the midfield group would only benefit from his namesake’s presence, but that it would not look to “reinvent the wheel too much” after a top-four finish this season.
“He was a pretty special player, so I’m looking forward to working with him. He’s a really smart player when he did play, and his coaching speaks for itself in the time we’ve had with him so far,” he said.
“I can’t wait to work with him.”
Mitchell had shoulder surgery after his Brownlow-winning season and said after the 8-10 week recovery period he had been unhampered in his training.
Nissan today signed on as Hawthorn’s car sponsor for the next three years.
