HAWTHORN has quietly extended the contracts of Jarryd Roughead and James Frawley until the end of next year.

The club spent much of last year working through the futures of veterans Luke Hodge and Shaun Burgoyne and retaining a bunch of emerging youngsters.

But this year will be much less troublesome, with defender Frawley’s initial four-year deal having a games trigger for a fifth season.

Having met that condition, the 29-year-old will come out of contract at the end of 2019, by which time he will have turned 31.

New rules governing free agency could have made Frawley’s recontracting more troublesome given he was a free agent at Melbourne before joining the Hawks.

One proposal that could be adopted for free agency this year would mean anyone who has already been a free agent becomes a free agent again when they come out of contract.

It would make them unrestricted free agents and give them greater leverage when re-signing with their current clubs.

The Hawks did not publicise their extension for Roughead when they gave him an extra year as he was battling cancer through 2016.

But he will be 32 when his contract finishes at the end of 2019.

His recovery from a life-threatening melanoma was one of the inspiring stories of hte 2017 season, Roughead kicking 38 goals and playing every game.

Paul Puopolo comes out of contract this year, while Shaun Burgoyne will assess his form but seems in no rush to retire after a storied career.
