FIERY Hawk James Sicily has labelled his goal celebration on Friday night as “horrendous”, but has pledged not to tone down the emotions that have made him one of the most talked about AFL players this year.

The 22-year-old defender snuck forward during the second quarter of the clash against Western Bulldogs and launched a long-bomb goal accompanied by a smug look of satisfaction, nodding head and raised fingers.

HOT HEADED: CONFIDENCE, NOT ARROGANCE DRIVING SICILY

“I actually don’t even know what I was doing then mate, that’s horrendous,” Sicily told Channel 7’s Brian Taylor after the match.

When pressed further by Taylor about how those goal celebrations made for compelling viewing, Sicily smiled and added: “OK, I will keep doing them.”

A week after being physically targeted by Carlton’s Jed Lamb, Sicily said he would continue to play his football with an emotional filter because that’s how he gets the best out of himself.

“I like to play on the edge ... otherwise I just go through the motions,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say I’m cocky ... I can see maybe how that can be perceived. I would say I am confident in my own ability.”

The forward-turned-defender was pleased to hit back on Friday night with a career-high 31 disposals after being well held by Lamb last week.

“It was good to bounce back individually and as a team,” he said.

“We played really well and gave Hodgey (Luke Hodge) a rightful send off.

Sicily even gave Taylor a bit of a clip after asking whether he had signed a new contract with the Hawks — which had been announced a few days earlier.

“It has already come out, good to see you are up with it mate,” he said with a smile.
