The deal will involve a swap of draft selections, with Carlton’s involvement crucial.

In exchange for O’Meara, Gold Coast will receive pick 10 and a future second-round selection.

Hawthorn secured the second round selection from Carlton in exchange for picks 48, 66, and 70.

WHO WON? WHO LOST? SAM EDMUND, MICK WARNER AND HUDDO ON ALL THE BIG MOVES FROM THE AFL TRADE PERIOD

“We are pleased that a deal has finally been reached to bring Jaeger to Hawthorn,”

Hawthorn recruiting manager Graham Wright said.

“It has been a lengthy process and we are rapt that we can now officially welcome him to our club.

“At only 22 years of age he is an exciting prospect and has many years of good football ahead of him.

“He has undergone some recent injury troubles, however we are confident that our medical and conditioning staff can work with Jaeger to see him produce his best football.

“I, like many of our fans, look forward to seeing what he can deliver in the brown and gold.”

Gold Coast football manager Marcus Ashcroft said: “We had been clear with our expectations to Hawthorn throughout the trade period and to their credit they worked incredibly hard, especially late in the piece, to satisfy our needs.

“In addition to accepting Hawthorn’s offer we were able to generate an additional future second round selection.

“As a result we have been able to secure a significantly stronger hand next year which we can either use at the draft, or during the exchange period like we did this year to secure Pearce Hanley.”

TIGER GONE: DELEDIO TRADED FOR FUTURE PICKS

CONTRACT SURPRISE: MITCHELL HAD CLAUSE FOR 2017

While Gold Coast did not bring in an experienced player, the net of draft points received effectively delivers its desire to trade O’Meara, 22, for two early selections.

The Suns have already landed Pearce Hanley, Jarrod Witts and Jarryd Lyons to help them improve in 2017.

The Hawks have averted a major embarrassment and have suddenly gone from paupers to princes in trade talks.

They faced the prospect of walking out Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis without locking in their No. 1 target in what would have been a bungled trade period.

But Hawks’ list chief Graham Wright has now secured Tom Mitchell, Ty Vickery and O’Meara.

Wright said he barely slept last night as the Hawks went into overdrive to land their man.
