AS if Hawthorn’s Isaac Smith didn’t have enough on his plate, he has had to defend himself against allegations of arrogance after the final siren in the qualifying final loss to Geelong.
When Smith lined up to kick for goal with his team three points down, the TV cameras captured him smiling as he answered someone on his right.
What we didn’t see was that was umpire Dean Margetts, who asked Smith if he knew the siren had gone and he couldn’t play on.
Smith acknowledged Margetts with a nervous-looking smile before unsuccessfully getting down to the job at hand.
The social media blow torch was quickly applied to Smith, the smile being seen as a sign of arrogance.
Teammate Shaun Burgoyne said he had spoken to Smith after the exchange with Margetts.
“I just yelled out ‘Take your time mate, go through your routine and what will be (and) we’ll deal with the consequences’,” Burgoyne said.
“Unfortunately it didn’t go through and we deal with it and move on.
“That’s everyone’s childhood dream, it’s my childhood dream to do that and to kick the goal (after the siren).
“So the boys get around him, say bad luck and we move on.”
Hawks star Sam Mitchell also offered words of encouragement before Smith’s shot at goal.
Mitchell was the first player to console Smith after the miss and said his teammate had the mental toughness to move on from the disappointment.
“If you know him as a bloke, he’s full of energy, full of life, full of enthusiasm,” Mitchell said on Fox Footy last night.
“In a strange sort of way, if someone’s going to miss that shot, he’d be in the top handful of blokes I would rather it happen at our club because he’s got the resilience and he’s the type of guy who’ll come back from it and it won’t define his career.
“He’s done some fantastic things for us. Although it’s an important moment, just telling him to take his time and enjoy it didn’t really work, did it?”
