HAWTHORN star Jarryd Roughead has started his 12 months of immunotherapy to treat four cancerous spots on his lung.

The 29-year-old is expected to be out of football for at least 12 months after being diagnosed with a recurrence of melanoma in May.

Roughy’s wife Sarah posted an image to her Instagram with the message, “Today we start. The sooner it’s beat. My husband, my best friend & the ultimate warrior.”

Immunotherapy blocks proteins that prevent the body’s disease-fighting immune system from attacking cancer cells.

The biologic therapy is designed to boost the body’s natural defenses to fight the cancer.

Roughead has expressed his desire to return to AFL next year and hopes to continue training throughout his treatment.

“The sooner that we start (the treatment), the sooner that it’s beaten and it’s all over,” he said last week.

“I’m still going to be out here, still going to be going on trips and stuff, so it’s not as if I have to go away. I don’t lose my hair — nothing like that happens. I’m still going to be the same old me but unfortunately I just can’t play.”

Roughead is adamant that he be treated as “normal” throughout his treatment and wants to remain at the club and be part of as many meetings and training sessions that he is able.

“I heard rumours I was going to retire, but I’m 29 and have still got two and a half years on a deal,” he said.

“I’m still going to be here for two and a half years and hopefully longer. That’s the plan.

“You can come to my first game back.

The football community has been quick to rally around Roughead in support of his fight.

Roughead’s wife Sarah posted a photo her Instagram this morning with the message, “Today we start. The sooner it’s beat. My husband, my best friend & the ultimate warrior.”
