JAY CLARK: CALCULATED HAWKS SETTING UP NEXT FLAG TILT

In return for losing a collective 571 games, eight premierships and six best-and-fairest awards, the Hawks have received draft picks 48, 52, 66, 70 and 88.

They have also acquired maligned ex-Tiger Ty Vickery as a free agent and former Swan Tom Mitchell, while a deal is yet to be struck for Gold Coast midfielder Jaeger O’Meara.

The Lewis trade didn’t go down well among Hawthorn fans.

Supporter Baron Grant wrote on the club’s Facebook page that he didn’t mind the Hawks doing trades but “is there any chance that we can actually get something in return. Some of the worst deal making in the history of sport!”

Bradley Hansen wrote: “Loyalty goes both ways Clarkson. Another top-four finish isn’t worth burying our club champions that have been paid undoers for years to pay Ty Vickery a million dollars.”

Rob Jones was even more scathing: “I’m disgusted by what Hawthorn has done this trade period, we’ve been pretty much walked all over in each deal that’s been done. If the O’Meara deal doesn’t get done then it’s been a massive failure.”

Another fan, Kirstie Spooner, ended her comment with a crying emoji: “Was I completely deluded thinking that at the end of next year we could give Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge and Burger the send-off that they deserve?? The way we are treating our club champions has tarnished those premiership wins for me ... Next year’s going to be tough to watch.”

Melbourne fans, in contrast, couldn’t believe their luck, flooding the Demons’ Facebook page.

“Boss just looked at me real funny when I stopped the grader, and proceeded to yell in joy out of the cabin!!!!” wrote Steven Carman.

Daniel Lawson added: “Gotta get those finals tickets!”

The move also caused a social media meltdown.
