GWS Giants dismiss Jeremy Cameron shoulder concerns as “stinger”, keeping bid for 100 goals on track

GWS has dismissed concerns about Coleman Medal favourite Jeremy Cameron’s shoulder after a ‘stinger’ forced him from the field for the second time this year during the Giants victory over St Kilda.

Jeremy Cameron’s right shoulder won’t stop his rampaging campaign to win the Coleman and push close to a magical triple-figure goals tally.

Cameron came from the ground after a knock to his shoulder against St Kilda, the second time this year he has been bothered by his right shoulder.

But GWS football boss Wayne Campbell said Cameron had no damage to his shoulder which would require him to be rested in coming weeks.

Cameron has been backed into $1.75 after a week in which he kicked 6.1 to move to 30.16 for the season, while the contenders around him fell away.

The GWS star is 13 goals ahead of Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey and Richmond’s Tom Lynch as the Giants prepare to take on Hawthorn at the MCG.

Cameron also came off against Richmond in Round 3 in a clash where he kicked 7.5 from 30 possessions but Campbell said he had no ongoing issues.

“It wasn’t even an AC joint, it was just a stinger. He will be fine. I think he got hit on the same spot (as the Richmond game). It wasn’t a recurrence, he was just unlucky to get hit in the same spot. Both times he has come back and done pretty well.”

Cameron’s ability to play with pain is renowned, the left-footer playing almost the entire 2018 season with a broken toe.

The Giants will get a medical report on Phil Davis (ankle), Aidan Corr (ankle) and Josh Kelly (groin) on Tuesday but at 5-2 are showcasing their depth despite the injury list.

TAB spokesman Nick Quinn said Cameron had been well backed since the pre-season, with Tom Lynch ($6) and Ben Brown ($10) long odds to knock him off.

“He was very well backed at $21 in the pre-season. He was $21 into $17 and he has done nothing but shorten since then. This has been the shortest priced a player has been at this stage of the season for some time.”

GWS has had a lengthy injury list in recent years but Campbell said the club was trying to make prudent decisions on players this year.

“We have probably been a little bit more cautious but nothing dramatic,” she said.

“I think we have had similar incidents in the last couple of years where we haven’t pulled the trigger and played guys and without naming names we have played guys this year where players have needed to get through fitness tests.”
