THE AFL Players’ Association has slammed the “disrespect” it says shown toward Toby Greene and said incidents such as the beer-throwing threaten one of the greatest elements of the game.

General manager of player relations Brett Murphy said that no one should be subjected to such behaviour in the workplace.

The Giants informed the AFL of a post-game incident where a Western Bulldogs fan allegedly poured beer over Greene.

The Giants asked the match broadcasters, the Seven Network, if they had any vision of the episode which happened when the GWS players were walking up the race after their 48-point victory at Etihad Stadium.

On Saturday night Channel 7 briefly showed the alleged incident, but from the vision it was difficult to see what substance was poured or if it did in fact hit Greene.

Earlier, Murphy said if the allegations were correct he wanted to see action.

“Buying a ticket to the footy does not grant fans the right to show such disrespect to the players,” he said.

“The close proximity of players to fans is one of the great aspects of our game, and incidents like this threaten to ruin it for everyone.

“We have got full confidence that the AFL and Etihad Stadium will take appropriate action.”

The league said it was reviewing both broadcast and security vision from Etihad Stadium and will continue to investigate the matter.

Greater Western Sydney co-captain Phil Davis said players don’t deserve such treatment.

“I must admit that some of the behaviour of some of the supporters was disappointing,” he said on 3AW.

“For a player to go and play and someone then pour a beer on their head as they’re walking off, I don’t think that’s what we as players deserve or we as away players deserve.

“I think it’s just not right and it’s disappointing. Toby doesn’t complain about stuff, but at the same time we as footballers deserve our right to walk off the ground without having beer thrown on us.”

Greene was reported for rough contact during the third quarter when his boot made contact with the face of Bulldogs midfielder Luke Dahlhaus. Dahlhaus was forced to leave the field for medical attention which included a staple to his chin.

Even before the clash the Giants small forward was booed whenever he went near the ball. The Bulldogs fans remembered the Round 6 clash in Canberra when Greene copped a one-match ban for striking Caleb Daniel.

Friday night’s report is the fifth incident Greene has been charged with this year.

Greene’s teammate Heath Shaw confirmed on SEN that there had been an incident.

“Yeah, there was a bit said after the game,” he said.

“Obviously Toby’s a close mate of mine and he said that something happened on the way down the race. I don’t think the Bulldogs fans were too happy with Toby after the game.

“Something along those lines happened and the club are looking into it. The powers that be are going to deal with it. There’s not really a lot that I can say on the matter, but it’s not great.

“I didn’t think anything was going to happen — it’s a funny game, football, when you’re getting booed then you’re doing something wrong or you’re doing something right.

“Usually you’re a good player from an opposition team if you’re getting booed and that’s exactly what Toby is.

Fellow Giant Dylan Shiel also confirmed the incident and praised Greene’s mental strength after being reported.

“That’s the way Toby plays. He’s high energy and plays on the edge,” he told Fox Footy.

“That’s disappointing to hear but I can’t comment to much on that.

“No one likes to see that, it’s not a good look for the sport. To hear that happened is disappointing.

“He’s pretty happy after the win. It’s really impressive for a guy who gets reported, some can go into their shell, but Toby put it behind him and showed how strong he is mentally.”
