ONLY a last-minute disaster will stop Patrick Dangerfield from playing on Monday.
And the prospect of the Brownlow medallist lining up alongside club greats Gary Ablett and Joel Selwood isn’t lost on Geelong coach Chris Scott.
Dangerfield suffered a hamstring injury in the JLT Community Series that kept him out of Round 1, but Scott said the trio is all but locked in to feature together for the first time on Monday against Hawthorn.
GARY’S MISSION: I WANT DAD BACK AT CATS
STRONG WORDS: I’M HERE TO WIN A FLAG
“I can’t see any scenario in which he won’t play. We were very confident almost a week ago,” Scott said.
“It’s exciting. It’s exciting for him – he’s looking forward to getting into the season and there’s no bigger occasion than Easter Monday against the Hawks.
“It’s exciting for our supporters, as well. It’s an occasion I would imagine that they don’t want to miss being there live to see Ablett, Selwood and Dangerfield play for the first time. It’s always a big game but there are a few extra reasons to be excited.”
The trio – who have amassed 755 games between them – will be let loose in the midfield together at times, Scott confirmed, with the coach equally as excited about the significance of Monday’s blockbuster that he said will be “historic”.
“Especially when the game starts,” he said.
“It’s different for the players, who need to be really focused in on what they’re doing. We in the coaches’ box watch it differently, but there is some excitement that’s generated by these historic moments.
“The other part I think we’re all aware of … is we should seize the moment, because there’s no guarantee that it’s going to last for a long time. Those guys are in the back-end of their careers. My advice is don’t miss the moment.”
Scott also confirmed that local product Jack Henry will make his debut.
“It’s not a matter of pushing in another debutant because we just want to play the young guys,” he said.
“He’s truly earned his spot and we’re hopeful that he can keep playing in a similar manner to the way he’s been going at VFL level. If he does that, he’ll have an impact on the game.”
Defender Harry Taylor is out with a plantar fascia injury that Scott said is still being assessed, with surgery the least likely option at this stage.
He will miss the next few weeks at least, Scott said, with the path taken from here still being contemplated.
