GEELONG has emerged as a surprise suitor for Fremantle livewire Hayden Ballantyne.

While the Cats believe a deal remains unlikely, Geelong coach Chris Scott is a big fan of the goalkicker.

It is understood Scott previously tried to lure Ballantyne to Geelong soon after her accepted the Cats’ senior coaching position in 2010, but the fiery forward knocked back an offer.

TRADE HQ: LATEST NEWS AND WHISPERS

Geelong forward Shane Kersten is uncontracted for next season and has been linked to a potential return to Western Australia.

Kersten could be offered as a straight swap but it is understood Ballantyne’s preference is to cross to the West Coast Eagles so he can remain in Perth.

Geelong has little room in its salary cap and is preparing to be only a minor player in this year’s trade period, save for an unexpected departure.

Ballantyne is looking for a new club for next season as the Dockers plot an aggressive list overhaul.

Ballantyne, 29, is contracted for next season and has also been linked to moves to West Coast, Essendon and Greater Western Sydney.

He has kicked 26 goals from 20 games this season.
