“We at Surf Junction love our footy and we’d love to see Gazza back in the hoops in 2018!” a flyer reads.
The “Get Gaz Back” tribute will coincide with the Cats’ final round clash against Greater Western Sydney at Simonds Stadium where a win can book Geelong a top-two spot and home qualifying final.
Ablett, 33, is contracted at the Suns for one more season and has been cleared to return from injury against Port Adelaide on Saturday, but says he could retire if he was unable to return home to Geelong in part for family reasons.
Ablett will have to take a pay cut and be open to play in the forward line to move to Geelong.
Geelong chairman Colin Carter said at the weekend the player leadership group would have a strong say on how hard the club pushes for Ablett’s return.
Business-owner Naomi Patten said the community wanted Geelong chiefs to strike a deal with Gold Coast.
Patten said Ablett’s return would give the Geelong community a lift.
“We need him back and there is spot in the midfield for him alongside Paddy (Dangerfield) and (Joel) Selwood,” Patten said.
“I think if you are driving around Geelong, turn your headlights on because we want to send the message we want him back and it’s a way of getting everyone together.”
They have also created the social media hashtags #TurnYourLightsOnForGazza and #BringGazzaHome.
