Ross Lyon says ‘odds in Fremantle’s favour’ in fight to re-sign Nat Fyfe

FREMANTLE coach Ross Lyon has addressed the rumour that Nat Fyfe is set to join St Kilda at the end of the season.

ROSS Lyon says Fremantle is the clear favourite to retain Nat Fyfe because “possession is nine-tenths of the law”.

But the Dockers coach says he has no expectations about his captain’s next contract and “it’s not my job to sign Nathan”.

CLASSIC: PERTH POLICE WIN TWITTER WITH FYFE ‘SCOOP’

Lyon was quizzed on Channel 7 in Perth about the rumour that sent the footy world into a spin on Monday that Fyfe had agreed to terms with the Saints on a contract worth $1.5 million a season.

The Saints and Fyfe’s management both dismissed the reports and Lyon said he was confident Fyfe will stay.

“He’s fully committed, he’s with us, possession’s nine-tenths of the law and he’s our captain,” Lyon said.

“We love him, he loves Perth, he loves his family, so I would think the odds are in our favour.

“At the end of the day it’s not my job to sign Nathan, my job is to provide an environment that he enjoys playing in and growing in and improving in, and we feel we’ve done that over a long period of time.

“We just concentrate on the job at hand and don’t worry about click bait too much.

“He’s a wonderful captain, he’s been leading us strongly along with David Mundy and the other leaders.

“It’s not something I concern myself with and I wouldn’t have that Nathan does as well. That’s just the reality of free agency and restricted free agents, every club deals with and we’ll just work our way through it in the fullness of time.”

Lyon, who dramatically defected from the Saints to become Dockers coach at the end of 2011, added a Fyfe move to the Saints would have a sting in the tail: “St Kilda, that would be ironic, wouldn’t it?”

Yesterday, the Perth radio host who lit the Fyfe rumour fire was standing by his story.

“I have a credible and trustworthy source who gave me the information,” Brad Fitzgerald said on 96FM.

“With contract negotiations, I suspect there are a lot of agendas at play here.”
