Harley Bennell is set to be welcomed back by the Fremantle Dockers following his suspension

HARLEY Bennell looks set to get another chance to reignite his AFL career, with the Dockers keen to welcome him back into the club following his eight week suspension.

What does the future of AFL footy look like?

BANISHED Fremantle star Harley Bennell is set to receive yet another chance to revive his stalled career, with the Dockers confirming he is in line to be welcomed back on Tuesday as soon as his eight-week ban expires.

Bennell was sent away from the club in January after he was thrown out of a nightclub by bouncers the night before pre-season training resumed from the Christmas break. The Dockers gave no guarantees about any return, saying it would depend on his “future actions”.

The 25-year-old is due to meet club officials, including coach Ross Lyon, on Monday. Bennell will undergo physical testing and discuss whether he has met the benchmarks required for his acceptance back into the club.

However Fremantle football operations manager Chris Bond has confirmed to The Sunday Times that Bennell — currently recovering from a minor calf injury he suffered while training with Peel — was likely to be taken back.

“We’ll just get all of the information over the next couple of days. Once we’ve got all that information, we’ll be able to have a look at what work’s been done and how he’s been going. And then, based on what we said eight weeks ago, we’ll look at the situation,” Bond said.

“But he’s due back Tuesday.

“It’s obviously likely, considering the amount of work that he’s done, that everything is going to fall his way. But before we make those calls, I think it’s important from a club point of view just to get all the information in front of us.”

Bennell is unlikely to be considered for next Sunday’s JLT Community Series match against West Coast in Joondalup due to his calf issue and time away from Fremantle training.

The gifted footballer is expected to return to the field via the Thunder, who will play WAFL pre-season fixtures on March 17 and 24 that loom as potential comeback dates.
