John Worsfold says he was ‘really disappointed’ with Conor McKenna’s decision to play in a Gaelic football match

Conor McKenna may have kicked an important goal in his off-season Gaelic football appearance, but it didn’t sit well with the Bombers, who were left ‘really disappointed’ with his decision to suit up.

Essendon coach John Worsfold admits he was left “really disappointed” with running defender Conor McKenna’s decision to play in a Gaelic football game during his off-season.

The Irishman suited up for his local club side earlier this month, scoring a goal in the thrilling 15-13 win.

McKenna’s decision left the Bombers far from impressed, with the 23-year-old failing to seek permission from the club.

“That was something that we weren’t aware of. We certainly didn’t send him back there to play footy,” Worsfold told SEN radio.

“I was really disappointed when I heard that.

“We know that he is passionate about his Gaelic footy. He is passionate about footy. He is an energetic young man. His personality is so up and about. I could imagine them saying, ‘Do you want to have a kick?’

“It puts them (the player) at risk of an injury or doing something that’s outside their contract. In effect it puts them at high risk of costing themselves a contract or a lot of money if they get a serious injury.”

Worsfold said he will speak to McKenna about his decision when he returns to Melbourne to start pre-season training.

The defender is coming off his best season at the top level, playing 22 games in 2019. He averaged career high numbers in disposals (20.8) and rebound 50s (4.9).

“We at least feel like he (McKenna) could have rung and could have checked,” Worsfold said.

“Out of everything you can do as a footballer in the off-season, going and playing non-contact football would be the best. Better than going snow skiing or playing basketball or rugby.

“Something that you don’t do day in and day out. He went and did something that is probably the safest form of exercise that he could possibly do. He just did it in a competitive environment.”
