Wayne Carey has doubts Nathan Buckley will survive

AN AFL legend has given a dire prediction for Nathan Buckley’s future after a string of poor performances by Collingwood.

AFL legend Wayne Carey thinks Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley is on borrowed time.

The Magpies slumped to another disappointing loss to St Kilda on Easter Sunday, which brought the heat on Buckley once more.

Collingwood currently sit in 13th position on the AFL ladder and have won just one game so far this season.

Carey told Triple M Footy that he believes the club will soon lose patience with their embattled coach.

“It’s only four games, but you’ll be judged on W’s and L’s,” Carey said.

“The way things are looking for “Bucks” you have to say it’s a matter of time. It’s a matter of time.”

The AFL Hall of Famer also criticised the game plan Buckley is employing at Collingwood, saying that it is not dynamic enough to compete with the best in the AFL competition.

Collingwood sit 1-3 after four rounds, showing that a change in tactics may be required if they are to make a run to the top eight this season.

“I look at Collingwood and their game plan is fairly simplistic,” Carey said.

“If they don’t bring manic pressure in and around the footy and tackle, they lose. They’re not good enough.”

Collingwood have proven inconsistent throughout 2017, but won praise for their performance against Sydney last round. The Pies battered last year’s beaten Grand Finalists, giving fans optimism that the Pies could turn their fortunes around.

But the performance against St Kilda undid all the good work from the week prior, as the side managed just seven goals for the match.

Carey says that performance proved the Pies are simply one dimensional and have no other option, should they fail to physically dominate their opposition.

“The first quarter last week against Sydney where they sliced them open with precision kicking, they were absolutely brilliant,” Carey said.

“That’s probably the best quarter I’ve seen them play. Other than that, do you know what sort of game plan they have?”

Former Collingwood player turned commentator Brian Taylor didn’t agree with Carey’s summation of Buckley, saying that the club legend will not have to be forced out the door, should he believe his role is untenable.

Taylor says no one will work harder than Buckley to turn the Pies’ fortunes around.

“He is sort of the guy that when Nathan Buckley doesn’t think he can improve Collingwood, he’ll be the first to put his hand up and say, look, I think I’ve done all I can here,” Taylor told Triple M.
