While the superstar onballer has not given up hope of playing again this season, the setback is expected to rule him out for about another three weeks.
Collingwood will reassess his availability then, but could opt against risking its best player if the Magpies are out of the finals race.
Pendlebury’s first round of surgery was on Monday to insert a pin into his shattered finger which was injured in the win over Gold Coast.
He described the injury as the most painful he had experienced in his sparkling 252-game career but played with the injury throughout the second half of the game to help the Pies prevail.
The blow could deny the brilliant ballwinner a record-equalling sixth Copeland Trophy this year.
He is rated the No.2 player in the league according to the official AFL Player ratings.
