Scott Pendlebury criticised by AFLW supporters for misguided tweet

COLLINGWOOD captain Scott Pendlebury is in hot water with the club’s AFLW supporters for a misguided tweet about the return of football.

AFLX kicks off tonight and Pendlebury is parroting the message of excitement coming from league HQ with his tweet and poll: “who’s looking forward to footy being back on the screens tonight?”

But the Magpies AFLW team has been playing televised games of football since the women’s season kicked off on February 2.

Pendlebury’s followers didn’t miss in their replies to their leader.

“Footy has been back for two weeks. Would’ve hoped the men’s captain of a club that has a team in AFLW knew that”, Luke tweeted.

Some followers said Pendlebury was “rude” and “embarrassing” and he owed an apology to the club’s female footballers.

But he did have a small amount of support with one tweet saying Pendlebury “obviously means the mans season after a long break everyone needs to relax and get over themselves”.

Pendlebury returned to Twitter a short time later to clarify what he meant: “Sorry should have said AFLX being on the screens! Run a mile if you like.”

Pendlebury has almost 100,000 followers on Twitter.
