Paul Roos has dismissed fresh claims linking him to Collingwood coaching role

PAUL Roos has responded to fresh claims he is warming to the prospect of coaching Collingwood and that he’s spoken to Eddie McGuire, this time from his colleague, Wayne Carey.

PREMIERSHIP coach Paul Roos has dismissed fresh claims linking him to the Collingwood coaching job.

This time AFL great Wayne Carey has declared that his radio colleague Roos has changed his mindset on the Magpies and may be considering a return to the coaches box.

Roos has long been linked to Collingwood if it chooses not to re-sign Nathan Buckley.

HARDIE’S REPORT: McGUIRE, LYON SLAM PIES COACHING LINK

STICK TO IT: HARDIE ‘COMFORTABLE’ WITH LYON CLAIMS

Carey claimed on Monday night that he believed Roos has “definitely spoken” to Magpies president Eddie McGuire about coaching the club in 2018. It followed Brad Hardie’s explosive report that Fremantle coach Ross Lyon had approached the Magpies via a third party but was rejected.

Roos responded to Carey’s claims on Triple M in Adelaide on Tuesday.

“The job of the media is to speculate and talk about what may or may not happen,” Roos said.

“When I was in the media three years ago before I took the Melbourne job, I’ll just tell what’s happening (with coaching interests) at any given time.

“Now if that changes, I’ll tell you when it changes.

“But at this stage, as I’ve said a number of times, I enjoyed my time at Sydney and it was a bit of a surprise going back to Melbourne but I loved that time, loved seeing the boys improve and loved watching them play this year.

“There’s no intentions at all to get back into coaching at this stage and it’s just the furthest thing from my mind.”

AFL DAILY: ALL THE LATEST FOOTY NEWS IN ONE PLACE

A fuming Lyon labelled Hardie’s report that he’s willing to leave Fremantle mid-contract as a “complete fabrication”.

Buckley, who called for Hardie to be stripped of his AFL media accreditation, reiterated today he is not expecting any news about his job until after the home-and-away season.

“I believe that Walshy (football boss Geoff Walsh) and Peter Murphy are putting together the information that they’ve gleaned from the review and what the club’s plans are going forward (on Tuesday),” he said.

“We’ve said pretty consistently that at the end of the season would be when those discussions take place. So I’m not really expecting anything until after the Melbourne game.

“It’s not something that I’m thinking about until the end of the year.”

Carey made his claims about Roos and the Magpies on Channel 7’s Talking Footy on Monday night amid discussion about Hardie’s comments about Lyon.

“Roosy is very articulate when he talks about footy and we know that he’s been a great coach but his body language when he talks about Collingwood, seemed to me this year to be just a little different,” Carey said.

“I’ve said earlier I think Roosy would have definitely been spoken to by Eddie McGuire and if Eddie was doing his job, of course he’s going to speak to one of the great coaches that’s not coaching at the moment.

“I get the feeling that if Paul Roos doesn’t coach Collingwood next year, then Nathan Buckley will be.”

With just two matches remaining in Collingwood’s season the future of coach Buckley remains up in the air.

With finals now definitely out of the equation this year, it will be the fourth consecutive season the club has failed to reach September action.

The club is waiting for three separate reviews at the club to be completed, including a football department review headed up by football boss Geoff Walsh.

Asked whether he was 100 per cent on wanting to coach Collingwood next season, Buckley replied: “That’ll all be part of the discussion that will take place at the end of the year.

“As the club is gathering information for what its future is, I’m interested to see what that is also, and I’ll be part of that discussion.

“It’s not something that I’m thinking about until the end of the year.”

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire this week denied any approach from Lyon took place.

“That is just made up,” McGuire said.

“Has Ross Lyon spoken to Collingwood about wanting to be the coach of Collingwood or has Collingwood spoken to Ross Lyon? Definitely, unequivocally no.”

Ross Lyon was fuming about Brad Hardie’s report.

Asked on Sunday if he would speak with Lyon, Buckley said: “No, no. The key question is how can you allow someone to come up with absolute fabrications.

“Who is in your industry? That is the key question. That question (of needing to speak with Lyon) would not be there if you answer the first question (on Hardie’s role in the media).

“You do it … or wait for Gil to start taking accreditations away. That would be handy, wouldn’t it?”

McGuire maintains no decision on Buckley will be made until the end of the season.

“Anyone who’s talking about what’s going on with the coaching at Collingwood is making it up, completely making it up because no one has any visibility on this other than me,” he said on Triple M.

“I’ll tell you what’s happening — what we’ve said for the last four months and that is that we’re doing a full review of the club and in due course we’ll make a decision regarding that.

“You can’t go guessing at these things. Geoff Walsh is doing the review and he has had a full chat to the president and to the chief executive and we have a board meeting next week and we’ll get to the next part of where we’re going and then we’ll get to the part where we’ll make the decision.

“Relax, we know what we’re doing, we know how to run the club and we’ll make the decision when it’s right to be made when we’ve got all the facts in front of us.

“We don’t go running around in circles.

“We’re not going to be like politicians who run around in circles who can’t come out and make strong decisions based on what’s right rather than what’s based in focus groups.

“We’re not going to be bullied into things because people want to have a deadline because it suits them.

“No. (The decision) will be made in the fullness of time when all elements are on the table, it’s as simple as that.”
