Jeremy McGovern the best one-on-one defender in the game ahead of Lynden Dunn, Alex Rance

ALEX Rance is the third-best one-on-one defender in the game. The two players ahead of him this year may surprise you — and cause a rethink on Collingwood’s supposed recruiting failures. NEW PODCAST

THE ball is spiralling towards full-forward in the dying seconds of a close game and your team’s defender is one-out.

Who do you want hoping to kill the contest — Collingwood journeyman Lynden Dunn or triple All-Australian Alex Rance?

If you answered the Tiger, you are incorrect. According to Champion Data, that is, as revealed on this week’s episode of THE DRILL podcast.

Dunn’s strike-rate in defensive one-on-one contests is No. 2 in the AFL, nudging third-best Rance.

Perhaps that was a factor last week as Dunn was selected by Nathan Buckley and swingman Ben Reid was sent to the VFL.

Dunn, 30, has lost just five of 37 contests this season. West Coast’s Jeremy McGovern is the defensive one-on-one king, beaten just four times from 50 contests.

Lynden Dunn arrived at Collingwood from Melbourne in a swap of late draft picks.

When plotting the Hail Mary kick forward to win the game, Taylor Walker, Lance Franklin and Joe Daniher are the targets you want isolated.

Those three forwards have the best winning percentages for offensive one-on-one contests inside 50m.

WINS AND LOSSES: COLLINGWOOD TRADE REPORT CARD

As for targets all across the ground? Powerful Tiger Dustin Martin and Giants forward Toby Greene win out. Their stature suggest explosive Demon Christian Petracca might be on track to crack that category in seasons to come.

The Herald Sun’s Sam Landsberger and Champion Data AFL analyst Daniel Hoyne discussed the one-on-one kings in this week’s episode of The Drill.

Listen in to also hear why St Kilda’s first half against Richmond was the “close to perfection”, why Sydney can storm into the top four, some concerns at Adelaide and GWS and how Alastair Clarkson has rebuilt Hawthorn in 10 weeks.
