Tom Phillips winning Collingwood’s 2km time-trial each year was a fait accompli.

Now there’s a new time-trial king in town, and his name is Jay Rantall.

Just days after being taken with pick No. 40 by the Pies in the National Draft, the endurance machine has taken out Collingwood’s two kilometre time trial in a nailbiting finish with Phillips.

Not a bad way to start your AFL career.

Rantall broke the two kilometre time trial record with a stunning time of 5:50 – on the same track where he trumped Phillips – and came equal first in the yoyo test, reaching level 21.8.

The former basketballer enjoyed a fruitful under-18 season, claiming the Greater Western Rebels best and fairest and averaging 25 disposals, 6.5 tackles and just under a goal per game in the NAB League.
