HAWTHORN stunned the footy world with its bold recruiting moves at the end of last season.
Have they paid off?
The early verdict is a mixed bag according to voters in the 2017 Footy Fans Survey.
Three-quarters of the way through the season more than 28 per cent of respondents named Jaeger O’Meara as the worst value recruit of the year — five per cent behind current leader, Collingwood’s Chris Mayne.
The Hawks gave up pick 10 in this year’s draft plus some future picks to get O’Meara from Gold Coast, but he has been plagued again by knee injuries and played just four games.
That’s one more than Mayne, who has played most of the season in the VFL after playing at least 22 games in his previous six years at Fremantle.
As a free agent Mayne didn’t cost the Pies any draft picks, but they did sign the 27-year-old on a four-year deal.
On the other side of the ledger, the Hawks get a big tick for snaring Tom Mitchell from Sydney.
He’s the runaway leader in the “best value recruit” category, with Tiger Toby Nankervis a distant second.
Interestingly considering the Hawks moves, 8 per cent of fans voted new Eagle Sam Mitchell the best value recruit of 2017.
