COLLINGWOOD are hopeful star recruit Daniel Wells might finally be available for AFL selection in the next fortnight.

The former North Melbourne wingman has been sidelined by a persistent calf problem but trained with the main group on Monday.

While the 32-year-old Wells won’t be available to face Sydney at the SCG on Friday, he is a chance to be selected for the Magpies’ round four clash against St Kilda.

Tough midfielder Levi Greenwood and small forward Jamie Elliott are both a chance to face Sydney after also training strongly.

“They did everything that was asked of them, so that’s really good news,” Collingwood football boss Geoff Walsh said.

“We’ll see how they pull up in the next 24 hours and make a decision on whether they’re available this week or whether it’s another week.

“Daniel’s probably a week or so behind them but trained really strongly today, and I would expect this time next week he will be at least pushing himself into the frame for selection.

“He’s certainly over the hump and running and training strongly.” With coach Nathan Buckley under pressure after a 0-2 start, Wells’ recovery can’t come soon enough for the Magpies.

The high-priced recruit could inject some much-needed class and outside run to a midfield which has been heavily dependent on prime-movers Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar and Taylor Adams.

Injured youngster Jordan De Goey has also returned to training and is likely to be declared fit for VFL selection next week.

De Goey is required by the Magpies to serve a three-game AFL suspension after his broken hand heals because he lied about how it happened.
