Collingwood’s Adam Treloar says Round 1 still a chance for banned teammate Jordan De Goey

BANISHED Collingwood midfielder Jordan De Goey is learning valuable life lessons in his new life as a labourer, according to teammate Adam Treloar.

The 21-year-old was forced to get a day job on a building site and train with the Magpies’ VFL squad after he was caught drink-driving in Port Melbourne 11 days ago.

The club has said it wants to see a “meaningful” change before selection will be welcomed back to the senior fold and considered for senior selection.

Treloar said a Round 1 berth wasn’t out of the question — if he fulfilled his end of the bargain.

“We haven’t really seen him, because he’s been working,” Treloar said.

“Jordy’s attitude in terms of him being a great, fun-loving character doesn’t really change much. Obviously he’s quite disappointed with what’s happened and we hold him in such high regard that we get disappointed because he’s so important to us as a team.

“We want not only great players at our footy club but great people who put the footy first.

“The footy club and us players are well and truly behind him. We know he’s going to come out better at the end of it. He’s super vital to us.”

Treloar said that “if he’s available”, he doesn’t see De Goey being left out of the team.

“And if he lives up to what’s happened and has gone back and really assessed where he’s at as a person and putting the club first … I think that’s the thing that he’s missed in the last couple of times he’s sort of stuffed up,” he said.

“He is a great person and a great character and is one of our favourite people at the club because of the way he is as a person. If he’s up for selection, then I wouldn’t have any doubt that he’s going to be in the team because he’s an absolute star.

“I think we all would (want him alongside us) — because he’s here to help us win games. Him going away, working … and not in the footy bubble is going to help him really progress as a person and come back and be firing.”

Daniel Wells has been battling a troublesome achilles and Jeremy Howe (calf) and Jamie Elliott (ankle) are chances to feature in the JLT series at some stage.

Treloar was spotted at a scans clinic last night but said it was merely a “maintenance” check-up and if selected, he will be ready to play in the Pies’ JLT Community Series opener against Greater Western Sydney in Canberra on Thursday night.

“See how we go today and this week. I don’t know whether I’m playing or not — we’ll find out, but if I do, I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

He also said he doesn’t expect “too much” to change for the Magpies as they look to avenge their 13th-place finish from last year.

“I think last year if you watched our footy … when we played well — and we did play well a lot — we could pretty much match it against anyone,” he said.

“I think it was lapses in concentration in the game (that were costly) and beating ourselves up and if they got a run on, then we had our heads down and it was hard to get back into it.

“But we beat a lot of the top sides. Our biggest losing margin last year would have been about 30 points.

“We’re not changing too much to be honest and I think we worked well. I’m looking forward to attacking the season.”
