Collingwood star Jordan De Goey has been a disappointment, former coach Rodney Eade says

He’s viewed as one of the emerging superstars in the AFL but a former coach has turned up the heat on Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey, declaring he doesn’t do enough in games.

Jordan De Goey is widely viewed as one of the AFL’s emerging superstars but former coach Rodney Eade believes the Collingwood forward has been a disappointment.

The former No.5 draft pick is one of the Magpies’ matchwinners but like the rest of his team, struggled to have an impact against the Kangaroos on Saturday night.

De Goey had 17 disposals and kicked a goal in Collingwood’s 44-point loss, with coach Nathan Buckley moving him into the midfield during the second half to get him into the game.

Eade turned up the heat on the 23-year-old, declaring he wants to see him have a bigger impact on games.

“De Goey, to me, doesn’t do enough,” Eade said.

“What he does is miraculous at times but he’s got to be doing more. He’s a disappointment in many ways.

“He kicks some miraculous goals from the boundary, he can take a mark here and there but he doesn’t end up with 25 possessions and opens the game. That’s what we’re talking (about) that good players do, about consistency of their performance.

“If he’s not doing much and (Jaidyn) Stephenson is out, their forward line does struggle a bit unless it gets really good service.”

De Goey is Collingwood’s leading goal kicker this season, having booted 28 goals from 12 matches this season — seven clear of the suspended Jaidyn Stephenson.

The Magpies were smashed by North Melbourne in every facet of the game at Marvel Stadium, one week after coach Nathan Buckley declared his team had played its worst game in some time against Western Bulldogs.

Despite still being second on the ladder, Eade said Buckley would be concerned about his team’s form ahead of a big month of footy.

“I think he’d be worried,” Eade said on RSN927.

The Magpies are still second on the ladder after 15 rounds, with percentage separating it from the third-placed Eagles, and are one game clear of Greater Western Sydney in fourth.

But they’re facing a season-defining month, with matches against both the Eagles (Round 17, away) and Giants (Round 18, away) as well as the Hawks and Tigers.

Collingwood is not in good form at the moment.

Herald Sun columnist David King believes Collingwood’s big loss came at a good time but there are big problems that need to be addressed.

“The big problem at Collingwood at the moment is they’re not getting any sort of scoreboard return for their intercept work, for their ability to force the opposition into turnover,” he said on SEN.

“That’s 60 per cent of your score — I think Collingwood is scoring about 35 points …

“It’s not sustainable for the Pies to be going down this path.

“They’re a much better side than what they’re showing at the moment.

“They’ve got some problems (but) it’s all correctable.

“Nathan Buckley is right to say they’re playing really poor football at the moment and everyone is questioning whether that’s a little barb for the players, but he’s 100 per cent spot on.

“There’s time to correct but they’re going to have to raise the bar with their physicality.

“This loss has come at a good time for them. There’s plenty of time to gather themselves.”
