Collingwood should consider trading Jordan De Goey, says Tony Shaw – but his star power must be factored in

Despite suggesting Collingwood should consider trading gun forward Jordan De Goey at season’s end, premiership skipper Tony Shaw says the problem Pie’s on-field X-factor has to be taken into account.

Collingwood premiership captain Tony Shaw has declared embattled Pie Jordan De Goey “an issue”, and he has “no doubt” the club should consider trading him if he continues to transgress.

The star forward was last Saturday charged with indecent assault and missed Friday night’s win over Hawthorn in Sydney as he fulfilled COVID-19 testing requirements imposed as a result of attending a police station.

De Goey – who is out of contract at the end of the season – flew to Perth with suspended teammate Steele Sidebottom on Tuesday, with the rest of the club’s travelling party making the trip on Saturday.

“De Goey’s an issue, I’m with you totally,” Shaw said on 3AW.

“No doubt. No doubt (I would consider trading him at the end of the year).”

A comprehensive Collingwood “rap sheet”, which appeared in the Herald Sun on Friday, had contributed to Shaw’s view.

But he believes star power counts for plenty.

“If this was to continue the way that (De Goey) is going, he’s had four (mentions on the Herald Sun’s Collingwood rap sheet list on Friday),” Shaw said.

“The other thing is out of the 35 times people were charged, you know what happened? There was 14 of them from three players. One of them was a Brownlow medallist.

“Were we going to trade one Dane Swan when he had two or three times (incidents) before he won the Brownlow?

“You know and I know Lloydy (Matthew Lloyd). Essendon weren’t going to trade you if you got drunk a couple of times and did something stupid which maybe got you a fine, they weren’t going to trade you out were they? You know who they would trade? Number 25 on the list. Let’s not be stupid.”
