Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury has had surgery to repair a broken finger.

The five time best-and-fairest winner went under the knife in hospital yesterday and will face a stint on the sidelines.

While it remains unclear how long the injury will keep him out for, it is hoped Pendlebury, 31, will return well before the first final in eight weeks.

He won’t play Greater Western Sydney on Saturday afternoon and will meet with the surgeon in coming days to discuss a likely recovery timeline.

It is the skipper’s middle finger on his left hand, the same finger he cracked in the 2017 International Rules series.

Collingwood rookie John Noble savours stunning debut win over West Coast

Collingwood gets season back on track with thrilling one-point victory over West Coast

The superstar onballer produced one of the most courageous performances of his sparkling career on Friday night, defying the pain and destruction to steer Collingwood to the thrilling one-point win over West Coast on Friday in Perth.

Pendlebury broke his finger in the second term and was still best on ground showing his trademark class, gathering 32 possessions and three tackles.

It was one of the Magpies’ best wins on the road under coach Nathan Buckley as the club clawed back from 16 points down at the last change to upset the Eagles.

Collingwood was already one man down on the bench after losing defender Darcy Moore to a hamstring problem.

Onballer Taylor Adams made his return in the VFL on Saturday from a groin injury and looms as Pendlebury’s likely replacement. Adams has been out since the Round 7 win over Port Adelaide.

Pendlebury is in contention for his sixth All-Australian guernsey and would be in the running to be named captain for the first time, given his extraordinary consistency over his glittering 292-game career.

The victory keeps Collingwood in second spot and in line for a home first final.

The injured finger is not the one Pendlebury broke on his right hand against Gold Coast which ended his season in 2017.
