Fasolo hasn’t played more than 20 games since 2012 but managed 19 this year and won the club goalkicking award with 25 in just 12 games in 2016.
Magpies’ director of football Geoff Walsh said the injury wasn’t responding to treatment and there was no return timetable.
“It’s disappointing for Alex, who has had more than his fair share of setbacks over the journey,” Walsh said.
“We will know more post-surgery, about the exact nature of the injury and a recovery period, but at this point his pre-season will certainly be interrupted. How severely? We’ll know more next week.”
Fasolo played his 100th AFL game in Round 21 this year and has 133 goals since his debut in 2011.
