DUMPED Carlton utility Mitch Robinson was shocked to hear he was unwanted by the club.

Robinson, 25, was told on Tuesday his time at Visy Park was over — a month after he lied about being in a 5am city brawl that also involved teammate Jeff Garlett.

The Blues are working to engineer a trade, but even if there are no suitors Robinson will be offered up as a delisted free agent. He has just come out of contract.

His manager Tim Hazell, of Velocity Sports, said Robinson did not see it coming.

“I think he was surprised and a little disappointed because he loves the club and he played 100 games there,” Hazell said.

“But he understands that’s their stance and now that the next chapter is coming up hopefully his playing career will take off.”

It is understood Garlett, 25, is not safe either. Despite retirements, the sacking of Josh Bootsma and several delistings, Garlett has been told that if a suitable trade arises he, too, will be leaving.

Clubs have made preliminary inquiries about Robinson ahead of next month’s trade and free agency periods.

“There has been some interest ... just some inquiries about his state of mind and where he’s at,” Hazell said.

“It’s a really different position for him because he hasn’t come up against this before. But like he does on the field he will tackle every situation 100 per cent, so he knows he’s got to do the hard yards and hopefully he gets an opportunity.

“Carlton’s active and they’re obviously trying to facilitate that. It’s obviously an unknown with a few weeks of football still to go, but hopefully it runs its course and we can get a result and move on. He is completely open to going anywhere.”

Tasmanian Robinson was taken with pick 40 in the 2008 national draft. He finished seventh in Carlton’s 2011 best-and-fairest and ninth in 2012, but was never far from controversy in six years at the club.

Robinson was ordered by Carlton to complete two months of community service and donate $1000 to charity after video emerged of him in a fight at last year’s Big Day Out music festival.

He was suspended three times this season on striking and rough conduct charges, irritating coach Mick Malthouse.

Robinson’s departure follows the retirements of Heath Scotland and Nick Duigan, the sacking of Bootsma for posting inappropriate messages on social media and the delisting this week of Andrew McInnes, Tom Temay, Jaryd Cachia and Luke Reynolds.
