Charlie Curnow says he is ‘pretty confident’ he will play football in 2020

It has been a tough eight months for Charlie Curnow, who has suffered three separate knee injuries. But where is he at in his recovery? And what are his chances of playing some football in 2020?

Carlton young gun Charlie Curnow is uncertain when his knee will fully recover from his latest injury setback.

However, he is “pretty confident” he will see some senior football in 2020.

Curnow has endured a horror run of knee troubles over the past eight months, which began with the 23-year-old suffering ligament damage in Round 15 last year.

In October he dislocated his patella while playing basketball with friends and in November he sustained a separate fracture after slipping on a tile while walking up stairs.

Having undergone successful surgery to remove a set of wires from his kneecap last month, Curnow is now in a position where he can ramp up his rehab.

“I’ve been working really hard. It’s feeling better, but I’m just going to have to go off how my knee is feeling and when it’s feeling 100 per cent,” he told Carlton Media.

“Different people will say different timeframes.

“But all I can really say is, it’s tracking well. I’ve just got to listen to it, make the right decisions and go from there.

“I’m hoping to play footy this year and I’m definitely not ruling anything out, I’m pretty confident I will.”

While he hasn’t been playing, Curnow has found himself in the headlines on multiple occasions in recent months.

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes called out the young Blue, saying he had let his club down after two of his knee setbacks occurred away from the playing field.

Curnow admitted the scrutiny had been tough.

“I’m obviously taking the injury very seriously but you try not to listen too much about what people say … try not to read as much as you can,” he said.

During the AFL shutdown Curnow has returned home to Torquay where he is close to his parents and three of his siblings.

However, his brother and Carlton teammate Ed is missing from the isolation party.

“We all made a group decision to not let him into the house. He’s been kicked out,” Charlie said.

“Mum and Dad are loving having us back … it’s something I haven’t done for a few years now, which has been nice.

“But I’m missing my time away from (the boys) as well, so hopefully it’s a quick turnaround.”
