Carlton president Mark LoGiudice going nowhere despite slow progress in rebuild

Mark LoGiudice says he doesn’t have to defend his record or lack of a public profile, declaring he won’t be considering his position as Carlton president.

Carlton made the right call

Carlton president Mark LoGiudice denies he is the AFL’s “invisible” president, adamant he will stay the course despite the club’s teetering rebuild.

But the Blues say they will continue to review their entire football department including the list management team headed by Steve Silvagni.

Silvagni has gained more power after occasional friction with Bolton, who has been moved on after a lack of wins in his three and a half years.

LoGiudice said on Monday he had no need to reconsider his position as president of the club despite saying only eight days ago Brendon Bolton was safe as Blues coach.

He said he was freely available to fans at AFL, AFLW and VFLW games but didn’t feel the need to be a more vocal or media-friendly president.

“No, I won’t be (considering my position),” LoGiudice said.

“I speak to all the members quite regularly. I see them out at VFL games, VFLW games, I was out at a VFLW game at the weekend. I get direct messages from all the members.”

Having sacked Steven Trigg and Bolton soon after giving them assurances they were safe, he said he had a clear conscience.

He said sticking to the club’s plan of methodically building its list didn’t mean they wouldn’t make changes along the way.

Silvagni’s relationship with Bolton had at times been rocky given the slow speed of the rebuild under the senior coach’s care.

It has led to question marks about trades for Stocker, Matt Kennedy and Will Setterfield that were put in place by Silvagni.

There has been speculation about Silvagni’s tenure at the club and Liddle did not do anything to quash that.

But it would surprise insiders if Silvagni made any move to get to another club given his close relationship with LoGiudice and determination to see out the rebuild.

“All part of this footy club are under review,” Liddle said.

“We brought (football boss) Brad Lloyd in and within that we had some aspirations for all areas of our football department. Now the job is to make sure we have the right processes and people in place.”

But with Silvagni and his hand-picked team of Paul Brodie and Mick Agresta in recruiting and list management, he now has the momentum to again finish his rebuild after crossing from GWS.

“Quite simply the lack of wins has fallen short of what our football club expects of its development,” he said.

“There was an expectation we would start to see the benefits of that development. Carlton cannot afford to sit back and wait any longer. Winning does not solely rely on one individual but the ultimate accountability sits with the senior coach.”
