Star Lions recruit Jarryd Lyons welcomes first child Sebastian

It’s any sports fan’s dream. Watch the cricket all night, and the footy all weekend. And for little Sebastian Lyons, it’s all about being a peaceful influence in dad Jarryd’s hectic life.

Sebastian Lyons’ life has quickly settled into a cruisy routine – he spends weeknights watching sport with dad and weekends watching dad play sport.

The first child of Jarryd and Savahna Lyons arrived last week in time to see the Lions roll Geelong in front of a full house at the Gabba, and has spent the past two nights laying snug on dad’s chest watching the Ashes.

“It has been a joy, obviously it is a very exciting time at the footy club and there is a lot going on, so it’s nice to come and spend some time with him,’’ Lyons said.

“We’ve been up watching the cricket and I’m finding it really peaceful and relaxing.’’

Jarryd and Savahna are riding the rollercoaster reserved for all new parents, while also on the crest of a wave with the Lions.

Lyons admits he was a little knocked around by Sebastian’s arrival last Wednesday but says the support of his wife, who isn’t offended when he sneaks off to the spare room for some sleep, and the help of his mother-in-law has allowed him the best possible preparation for tomorrow’s huge clash with Richmond.

“It is such hard timing, it was tough last week having to get up for the game,’’ he said.

“You have nine months to prepare for it but once he arrived you felt you had no time.

“But I have been very lucky. My wife has been awesome about it, she understands I am still working and we have something we are trying to achieve as a footy club.’’

Savahna reckons Jarryd hasn’t missed a beat and her instincts that he would adapt to parenthood like a duck to water have been on the mark.

“He is actually very good. He is on bath duties, so he does that every night which is very helpful, he is very cute with him,’’ she said.

“He is a closet softie, he has always been a gentle soul and the love you have for a child you can’t measure. It has been really sweet seeing him with a baby.’’

Lyons will leave his family today for a match that will decide the minor premiership at a venue, the MCG, which has been a graveyard for the Lions.

The Tigers beat Brisbane by 93 points last year and this year’s only other visit ended with a 47 point loss to Essendon, but Lyons rejects the notion the ground presents a hoodoo the side has to overcome.

“We had a bad game early in the year, but I don’t know if that was the venue or if we just had a bad game,’’ he said.

“We certainly understand what the crowd will be like, it will be bloody loud and one way.

“But we think it is more the opponent than the footy ground. You have to win there if you want to win the big one.’’
