BRISBANE skipper Dayne Beams will miss up to a month and Sun Pearce Hanley at least a week after a tough weekend for Queensland’s best footballers.
The shoulder injury to Beams headlined a dark weekend for the biggest names at the Lions and Suns.
Hanley will have scans on Tuesday on his tight hamstring and although the suspicion is he has neural pain and not a tendon tear, the Suns are resigned to losing him for the match against the Kangaroos.
Queensland’s two clubs showed some fight against their top eight opponents, but they did so without much help from their biggest names.
Dayne Zorko and Daniel Rich had dirty nights in the Lions’ 10-goal loss to GWS while Suns skipper Tom Lynch is now officially in the first major form slump of his career after being kept goalless for the second week in a row.
Co-captain Steven May is also far from his best form.
They must beat the Kangaroos on Saturday to keep any slim finals hopes alive and Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft expects they will have to do it without Hanley.
“The things that are working against him are the six day turnaround and the flight,’’ he said.
“He didn’t have an episode, he just got tight and we erred on the side of caution and took him off.
“We have to assess the scan tomorrow but I would think it was unlikely he could play this week.”
The Suns are hopeful former skipper Gary Ablett can recover from a calf strain and take his place in the side for his 300th game.
“Gaz will run tomorrow with a view to training on Thursday, so he has two hurdles to get through,’’ Ashcroft said.
“We’re hopeful but he hasn’t run since last Friday so we have nothing to gauge that on until he runs tomorrow (Tuesday).
“If he can get through that he will be tested Thursday.
“It would be nice to have him in the side for his 300th game and for him to be able to play it at home.
Beams had scans on Monday which revealed he had strained his AC joint in a heavy bump by Giant Shane Mumford.
Brisbane football manager David Noble said the fact the skipper did not require surgery and would play again this year was a positive.
he also thought Beams had the capacity to cope with pain and therefore could return sooner than expected.
However, the loss of their best player will hurt them with tough outings against Essendon, Geelong, Richmond and a rejuvenated Carlton over the next four rounds.
Former Queensland Under 18s captain Ben Keays looms as a potential replacement. Keays was best on ground in the NEAFL at the weekend.
