Six teams share top billing on the AFL ladder after four rounds, with three of them surprise entrants in Brisbane Lions, St Kilda and Gold Coast.

Geelong continues to lead the way despite its disappointing second half against GWS, which rose into second spot after a stirring win after losing its captain Callan Ward.

Adelaide, Sydney, North Melbourne and Melbourne have serious work to do to recover their campaigns, however the latter two at least celebrated victories at the weekend.

Carlton is adrift at the bottom of the table and has serious questions to answer after it blew a golden opportunity for a win on the Gold Coast.

GEELONG — 12 PTS 140.4%

Too many had howling second halves, including some guns. They have some experience close to returning, although no time frame has been given re the X-factor in Cockatoo.

GWS — 12 PTS 124.7%

This outfit is good enough to win it but to lose a heart-and-soul player in Ward is gut-wrenching. Hopper is ready and willing, while Himmelberg compliments Cameron.

WEST COAST — 12 PTS 115%

Ultimately the good side gets the win via professionalism. But not sure there is a truly outstanding team in it this year, or maybe the strugglers have made up considerable ground.

BRISBANE — 12 PTS 109.9%

The fairytale always had an end date but it shouldn’t have been so comprehensive. In the AFL world, being able to play consistently well beats two hot ones and then a stinker.

ST KILDA — 12 PTS 104.2%

If only their finishing could match their tackling, they wouldn’t be testing the heart of their coach on a weekly basis. But you get the feeling there is some real passion with this group.

GOLD COAST — 12 PTS 103.4%

They can find ways to stuff up forward entries, namely by decision-making and execution. But they just refuse to die. Think their coach Dew might know a few things about a few things.

FREMANTLE — 8 PTS 127.8%

It comes down to a lack of goals, so when Hogan finds touch, he, McCarthy, Taberner, Walters and co can hopefully provide the potency. Langdon and brother Tom (Collingwood) are one of the game’s best family duos.

COLLINGWOOD — 8 PTS 109.7%

A couple of gears off last year’s peak form but that will come, particularly up forward where Hoskin-Elliott’s absence for at least a month is significant. Phillips finding form was crucial.

HAWTHORN — 8 PTS 107.8%

Lose O’Meara before the game and a couple more during it, so plenty went wrong. Had they won it would have been down in part to Puopolo’s pressure, particularly late.

WESTERN BULLDOGS — 8 PTS 105.6%

Honourable losses have to become stoic victories, which is usually the difference between the top sides and those aspiring. It will be some Brownlow this year with Bont, Danger, Cripps and co.

PORT ADELAIDE — 8 PTS 105.3%

Motlop running out of chances, while Powell-Pepper runs too hot and cold. On the flip side Burton is starting to slot in nicely and Boak is having his best start in some seasons.

ESSENDON — 8 PTS 95.1%

On a number of fronts there is no better advertisement for our game than McDonald-Tipungwuti. Hooker is vital for their structure while Brown remains a lengthy story of perseverance

RICHMOND — 8 PTS 86.4%

Lynch has won them one game, now for he and Riewoldt to work in tandem. Caddy makes such a difference and so exciting to get good games out of kids in Stack, Baker and Ross.

ADELAIDE — 4 PTS 86.8%

Whatever disease is afflicting them is beginning to appear terminal. You can virtually nominate their best six each week with very few surprises. So sayonara, unless their bottom

crew pick up the slack.

SYDNEY — 4 PTS 86.6%

Their kicking skills, often without pressure, weren’t befitting a finals team, nor were their overhead marking skills. They appear slow in the midfield and one-dimensional up forward.

MELBOURNE — 4 PTS 75.8%

Gawn and Preuss can work, but only against certain teams. But when Gawn plays like Thursday, only Grundy can match him for influence as a ruckman.

NORTH MELBOURNE — 4 PTS 73.1%

Their recruits in Polec, Pittard and Hall provided their best return as this side begins to settle. Turner and Anderson were low on stats but big on the one percenters.

CARLTON — 0 PTS, 79.1%

McGovern starting to show what all the fuss was about. Walsh proved bravery is part of his repertoire. Surely he gets Rising Star nomination this week. Dow has to compliment his smooth running with better finishing.
